In the heat of the action

Kia and Zarek work together during on of the three heats during the competition.

Only two members of each team are allowed to approach the playing field. These two students can make any changes to their robot while standing there during the time limit. Looks like Zarek is checking out what the other team is up to while Kia tries to get everything perfect.

White Elephant Sale Tomorrow

Come to the Kawananakoa Middle School cafeteria Saturday, September 4th. A white elephant sale will be going on to help raise funds for the Kawananakoa Orchestra and Drama programs. It's from 8:00 - 11:00am. Lots of bargains and things to eat.

Recycle your Capri Sun pouches

Kawananakoa School has joined the CapriSun Drink Pouch Brigade. 
Be a team player and help our planet by leaving your empty Capri Sun juice pouches (without the straw) in the Capri Sun Bin in the cafeteria
You are welcomed to bring your empty pouches from home as well. 
The pouches will then be mailed to the mainland where they will be upcycled into cool products such as backpacks and lunch bags.

Students may purchase Capri Sun juice during morning recess in the cafeteria.

Use it or lose it!

Please remember if you have signed up for and have been given your assigned locker number, it is your responsibility to put a lock on your locker and to start using it.
Lockers that are left unattended (no lock on it) starting Monday, August, 23, 2010, will be reassigned.
If there are any questions about your locker assignment or if you would like to give up your locker assignment, please come to the school office.
There are presently a limited amount of lockers available on campus, so if you were fortunate enough to get one assigned to you, please take advantage of the opportunity or else you will be faced with having your locker assignment taken away.

Scholastic Book Fair

The book fair will be August 23 - August 27, 2010.

Students will be visiting the book fair through their English & Reading classes. Schedules were distributed this week to the English & Reading teachers who will be bringing their classes to the book fair. The fair also continues shortly after school each day.

Kawananakoa Band Booster Club Membership Sign-Up and Renewal

We are asking the families of all band students to join the Kawananakoa Band Booster Club.  It's easy.  
Just visit the band website ( www.kawananakoaband.org ), download the registration form and send in your $15 dues with the form.  
Forms can be deposited in the drop box in the bandroom.
 
If you're not a registered member on the site, it's simple to register.  
Parents will need to register before they can download forms or see the calendar of events. Mr. Chin will create an account for all new students in a few weeks.

Auditions for October Drama Production!

Auditions for our KMS October Play for students interested in being actors and back stage crew members.
Auditions are open to all KMS students grades 6 - 8!
All grade levels interested in auditioning for The Kawananakoa Theatre Guild's October production please see Mr. Mew for an application and interview audition in C102 by Aug. 20th deadline.
Rehearsals are after-school M-F until 5 p.m. [rehearsal days will depend on your role in the play]. and Saturdays [ 2 p.m. - 5:30 p.m.]
Students involved in other activities during rehearsal times and performance should reconsider auditioning as we are seeking students who are able to commit themselves fully to the production.

Got Talent?!

Then we want YOU to audition to perform during this year’s Talent Show. 

Auditions will take place in the Auditorium on Thursday, August 26th during AA and lunch. Please go to KWKRM to sign up to audition. 

The Talent Show will be held in the auditorium on Friday, September 17th. 

Rehearsals for participants will be on the following dates during AA/lunch: 9/7, 9/9, 9/13, 9/14, and 9/16. 

All student fees and obligations must be cleared by August 30th in order to participate and/or attend the Talent Show. If you have any questions, please see Ms. Paoa.

Open House

Thursday, August 19th is the night of the KMS Open House.
It is the annual event when parents and families can visit the campus and meet his or her teachers.Teachers introduce themselves and give an overview of how their classes work.

5:00 - 5:40 pm - Dinner pick up starts
5:40 - 6:00 pm -  PTSA meeting
6:05 - 8:15 pm - Visit classrooms 

School will end at 2:00 pm on Wednesday, August 18th, instead of the regular 1:20 pm time.
School will end at 1:20 pm on Thursday, August 19th instead of the regular 2:00 pm.

6th grade Basketball sign ups

All 6th graders interested in playing intramural basketball during lunch time:
  • get a team of 5 together
  • come up with a team name
  • sign up with Mrs. Shirafuji in F202 during non-class time 
The last day to sign up is Wednesday, August 11th.

Nominations for 6th Grade Officers & Homeroom Representatives

Nominations are taking place this week. 
Nominees will be asked if they would like to run.
Campaigning will take place from Tuesday, August 10th through Tuesday August 17th. 

Elections will be held on CCTV on Tuesday, August 17th.
6th Graders will vote for their chosen officers during AA. 
Homeroom Representatives for 6th Graders are also due on Friday, August 6th.

New Student Orientation

Monday, August 2 is the first day for new student at Kawananakoa Middle School to report for orientation day. They will begin with an assembly to introduce the staff and procedures. Sixth graders will tour the campus with their AA teacher. There will also be field games to energize everyone.  Students will be able to met their new teachers, see where all their classes will be and get a chance to get comfortable before all the students arrive on Tuesday. Returning 7th and 8th graders report on Tuesday, August 3rd.

Lillian Nguyen has been named a merit award winner in the 22nd annual Lions International Peace Poster Contest. The theme of this year’s competition was “The Power of Peace.”
              Peace will only come around when people’s hearts change,” said Nguyen.
              Nguyen’s winning poster was chosen for its originality, artistic merit and portrayal of this year’s theme. She is one of 23 merit award winners chosen from more than 350,000 entries drawn by children ages 11 to 13 from 70 countries.
              As a merit award winner, she will be presented with a cash award of US$500 and a certificate of achievement by the Honolulu Lions Club, local sponsor of the contest.

Feb 26 Friday School Quality Survey

Friday, February will be the deadline to complete the School Quality Survey for parents of 7th and 8th graders. Please mail in your completed survey using the provided envelope.

Feb 25 Thursday Penny Drive

The KSA Penny Drive for the Cadd Family will end on February 25. Please make any donations before this day.

Feb 16 & 17 Grade 8 Graduation Picture taking

Students will need to wear uniforms on these days, just as a normal school day. Attire for the pictures will be provided by the photographer.

Turkey Leg pickup will be in the cafeteria from 9 to 1 p.m.
You will need to bring in the tickets to pick up your turkey legs.

Good news is that the Grade 6 Science Camp @ Mokuleia will be starting today. They will be leaving campus at 3:00pm. They will return Sunday at 10:30pm.

Deficiency Notices mailed to parents today. They were put in the mail Thursday morning and should arrive at homes within the next few days.

Feb 10 Hot Spot Sign Waving

Students and teachers, along with members of Farmer's insurance waved signs at the intersection of Nuuanu Avenue and Kuakini Street. This is a busy intersection and the group hoped to remind drivers to drive slowly and for students and pedestrians to cross the street with care.
